GSTIN Verification - How to Check a GST Number Before You Pay
GSTIN should match the legal name on the invoice and the state where the vendor actually operates. We walk through the GST portal search and what a cancelled or suspended GSTIN means for your purchase.
Every GST invoice carries a 15-digit GSTIN in the corner. Before you pay a new vendor or claim input tax credit, it takes thirty seconds to confirm that number is real and active on the GST portal. Yet plenty of finance teams skip this step till an audit throws up a mismatch - don't be that team.
What GSTIN verification confirms
GSTIN (Goods and Services Tax Identification Number) is the tax registration ID for a business under GST. Verification tells you the legal name, registration date, status (Active, Cancelled, Suspended), business type, and registered address. It's the GST equivalent of checking a CIN on MCA.
Search on the GST portal
Go to services.gst.gov.in β Search Taxpayer β Search by GSTIN/UIN. Enter the 15-character GSTIN exactly. The result page shows legal name, trade name, registration type, and status.
- Confirm legal name matches the CIN-verified company name (allowing for trade name differences)
- Check status is Active - not Cancelled or Suspended
- Compare registered address with MCA registered office and invoice address
- Note registration date - very recent GSTINs on old companies can be a warning sign
Cross-match with MCA and PAN
GSTIN structure embeds the PAN - characters 3-12 of the GSTIN are the entity's PAN. So if someone gives you GSTIN and PAN separately, they should align. Mismatch between GST legal name and MCA company name needs explanation.
GSTIN in vendor KYC workflow
GSTIN verification sits in the middle of a proper vendor KYC stack: CIN check on MCA, GSTIN on the portal, PAN cross-match, and bank account name verification. Skip any one layer and you're relying on paperwork someone printed at home.

Common questions
Is GSTIN search free?
Yes. The GST portal taxpayer search is free and doesn't require login.
Can I claim ITC if GSTIN is active but filing is pending?
ITC eligibility depends on the supplier filing GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B. Active status alone isn't enough - check filing compliance separately.
What does Suspended GSTIN mean?
Registration is temporarily suspended, often for non-filing. Don't pay invoices or claim ITC until status is restored.
Do proprietors have GSTIN?
Yes, if registered under GST. Proprietors won't have a CIN - use PAN-based verification instead.
How often should I re-verify a vendor's GSTIN?
At onboarding and periodically for high-value vendors. Status can change to Cancelled without notice.
